Context

Workplace accidents cost US$ 181.4 billion a year in the US alone

Source: National Safety Council, 2024

US$ 48 thousand per medically consulted injury, US$ 1.54 million per death and 102 million lost workdays. CompScience, founded in 2019 in San Francisco by Josh Butler, came to Atomsix to go after that problem with one premise: most accidents are predictable (and preventable) if companies can see the risk in time.

How we solved the problem

We built the “Intelligent Safety Platform”

A platform that turns the security cameras a company already owns into a system that actively prevents accidents. It runs more than 50 proprietary computer vision models that analyse the video continuously and detect struck-by hazards, slips and falls, ergonomic risk and near misses, with no new hardware to buy.

  1. Accident Detection

    • 96% of injury causes are detectable by the platform;
    • Struck-by hazards, falls, slips, ergonomic risk and near misses.
  2. Light deployment

    • Around 30 minutes of IT work;
    • First benchmark reports in 2 to 3 days;
    • No new hardware to buy.
  3. Evidence in real time

    • SMS and email alerts;
    • Automated weekly reports;
    • Timestamped video as evidence.

Validated results

Independent validation with Swiss Re

A study run with the reinsurer Swiss Re, covering 3,385 workers in controlled environments, measured a 24.5% reduction in detected risks after the platform went live. That evidence is what backed Swiss Re's capacity partnership and the Nationwide policies.

Michelle McCurry

“The CompScience program really works by itself. We were able to take the quantified risk data, choose from the proposed solutions, and reduce our risk exposure very quickly.”

Michelle McCurry, VP of Risk, Propak

Shelby Erectors

With more than 100 employees, it is Florida's leading bridge and rebar contractor, employing some of the best rodbusters in the country.

Jack Nix

“Accidents are going to happen. But most of them are preventable. People take shortcuts. The camera sees it, and now we do too.”

Jack Nix, COO, Shelby Erectors

Return on investment (ROI)

  • US$ 48 thousand per injury avoided

    That is the average direct cost of a medically consulted injury (NSC), before insurance premium, productivity and turnover.

  • Measurable side effects

    At Propak, turnover fell 24%, an HR cost rarely counted as a safety result.
